Ball Handling

This session can be used as a session in it's own right or simply take the drills and build them into your warm routines or sessions.

These drills are all about fast hands and awareness and can be used at nearly any age group.

Creating Space - Decision Making

The purpose of this weeks session is to put players decision making under pressure in a situation where both the ball carrier and the support player have to create space in an even contest i.e 2 v 2.

This session requires quick rotation through the practices and therefore, if for a large group ideally run withmore than one assistant coach. If this is not possible, it is an ideal session to concentrate on developing certain players.

The coaching points remain similar throughout. It is the increase in pressure on players that aids improvement of players decision making ability.

The session begins with getting the ball carrier used to committing defenders before passing, and for support runners supporting from depth and taking ball at pace. We overload the play in favour of attack before progressing it to an even competition where 2 attackers face 2 defenders.

This session can be used from under 9's right up to seniors. Expect to see players looking at the opposition defence pattern and looking at running support lines that create space

Releasing the overlap and Modified Games

Once the overlap has been created, what do we do with it?

There are many ways to create an overlap but too often our winger/fullback/backrower simplys runs into touch. This weeek we look at some ideas of how to avoid that and keep the move going.

There are a couple of moves shown here but use your own wide moves that release the player. PLy them against a proper defence i.e the correct number of defenders, starting in positions that they would in a game.

Finish with a conditioned game 8v6 with the defenders having to play a full back to recreate the practice in a more life like situation.
