A good defense in netball will force teams wide away from the D, preventing passes towards the hoop and goal shooter and forcing the only shots from the worst angles.

How to play against a well trained defense is not easy for any team, but with the right training you can give your team the best chance.

Training players to cut hard to the D and with well timed passes can break even the best defenses.

Punching on to the ball and peripheral vision

This week we look at punching out and peripheral vision. The key themes here are get players to used to strong deliberate movements to fake away from their marker and get-free to receive the ball.

Good peripheral vision is key to all players as they progress in Netball, so that play isn't continuous down one channel of the court, a good player is aware of the players all around them, so can quikly shift play and find space.

Again using dynamic words such as punching, we are looking to enforce with players, this isn't just a little step left or right but a really hard deliberate motion, which tricks a marker.

Conditioned Match Play

1 second netball - 2 teams playing normal rules but the ball carrier is only allowed 1 second to release the ball. Players will have to punch onto the ball. Receive, rotate and release in 1 second.

3 second netball 2 teams playing normal rules but the ball carrier MUST hold the ball for 3 secs. You will find everyone stands still whilst the ball carrier has the ball. WHAT I WANT IS FOR PLAYERS TO MAKE MOVEMENTS WHILST THE BALL CARRIER HAS THE BALL - AND THEN AT THE LAST SECOND PUNCH ON TO THE BALL. (this is a very funny exercise to watch as everyone inevitably stands still but the coach wants players still to be moving providing 2 leads and clearing for the player behind)

Match Play.

Use wide vision to note position of team mates and a drive and definite punch on to the ball.

Win the ball to Win the Game

Winning the ball is a key skill for all netballers. Your team can't be expected to win the game if they don't have the ball, and the less the opposition have the ball the less chance they have of scoring.

This week we give you series of practices looks at improving a players timing as they move onto the intercept.

Top Tips for Intercepting the Ball

• Watch the ball
• Keep feet moving
• Drive onto the ball to make an interception.
